1. What is a handpan?

A handpan is a steel percussion instrument that combines melody and rhythm into one. Played with the hands, it produces soothing, resonant tones that create an immersive, meditative sound. Each handpan is tuned to a specific scale, allowing for intuitive and harmonious play.

The handpan is more than an instrument—it’s an experience. Born from the fusion of percussion and melody, this unique creation traces its roots to the steel pan of Trinidad and Tobago, later evolving into the mesmerizing form we know today. With its soothing, bell-like tones and deeply resonant harmonics, the handpan invites players into a world of intuitive expression, mindfulness, and connection.

Playing a handpan is unlike playing any other instrument. There are no rigid rules or complicated techniques—just your hands, your rhythm, and your emotions. The curved steel sings beneath your fingertips, effortlessly blending melody and percussion into one. Whether you are drawn to the handpan for meditation, personal exploration, sound healing, or musical creativity, its voice has a way of grounding, inspiring, and transporting you.

2. What is the difference between Peace Pans and CanPan?

  • Peace Pans are entirely handcrafted in Hamilton, Ontario, by Luc Dupuis, using high-quality stainless steel. Each one is a unique, artisanal instrument, carefully shaped and tuned from start to finish.

  • CanPan is our more accessible and affordable option. The raw shells are sourced internationally but are tuned, finished, and quality-checked in Canada by Luc Dupuis, ensuring excellent sound and craftsmanship at a lower price point.

3. How do I choose the right handpan for me?

Consider:

  • Size – Larger handpans have deeper resonance and sustain, while smaller ones are more portable.

  •

  • Scale – Each handpan is tuned to a specific scale, creating a unique mood or feel. Some scales are uplifting and bright, while others are meditative and deep.

  • Experience Level – All handpans are intuitive to play, but if you're unsure where to start, we can help you find a scale that suits your style.

4. How do I pick the right scale for me?

There are many scales to choose from, and this can feel overwhelming. The goal is to narrow down to 2 or 3 scales that best fit your approach to the instrument.

Here are some things to consider:

Size

  • A larger handpan may feel big on the lap for people under 5’8”, while the medium size is a comfortable fit for all.

Bass vs. Treble

  • More bass (D and lower) creates a deeper, more relaxing sound—great for meditation, yoga, or calming personal play.

  • Higher notes (E and higher) create a brighter, more energetic sound—ideal for playing faster, jamming, or performing with other musicians.

Scales
Each scale has its own frequency, mood, and emotional experience. If you're unsure which to choose, we can guide you toward the best fit for your musical and personal style.

5. Do I need musical experience to play a handpan?

Not at all! The handpan is designed to be intuitive and easy to play. Because each instrument is tuned to a specific scale, there are no "wrong notes"—just natural, flowing melodies that emerge as you explore the instrument.

6. How do I care for my handpan?

  • Wipe it down after playing to remove oils from your hands.

  • Store it in a dry place to prevent rust and maintain tuning.

  • Use a protective case when transporting.

  • Apply occasional oiling to maintain the steel’s condition (Luc can recommend the best care for your specific instrument).

7. How long does it take to receive my handpan?

Each handpan is handcrafted and tuned with care, so production time may vary. Luc will contact you personally with an estimated timeframe for completion.

8. Can I request a custom handpan?

Yes! If you're looking for a specific scale or design, reach out to discuss custom options.

9. Where are your handpans made?

  • Peace Pans are fully made in Hamilton, Ontario, from raw stainless steel to final tuning.

  • CanPan handpans are partially made overseas but are tuned and finished in Canada, ensuring professional sound quality.

10. Can I try a handpan before buying?

If you're local to Hamilton, Ontario, we may be able to arrange a demo. Contact us to discuss options!

11. What scales do you offer?

We offer a variety of scales, each creating a unique mood. Some are bright and uplifting, while others are deep and meditative. If you’re unsure which scale is right for you, we’re happy to guide you based on your musical preferences and intentions.

12. What is a Mutant Handpan?

A Mutant Handpan has an expanded scale layout, offering additional notes beyond the standard 8-9 tone handpan. This allows for greater melodic range and unique sound combinations. Our Mutant Handpans – Large are designed for those seeking an expressive, immersive sound experience.

13. What’s the difference between stainless steel and nitrided steel handpans?

Our handpans are made from stainless steel, which offers:

  • Longer sustain and a rich, resonant tone

  • Better resistance to rust and corrosion

  • A smooth playing experience, ideal for meditation and expressive play

Nitrided steel (not used in our handpans) can have a shorter sustain and a drier tone but is more common in certain handpan styles.

14. What tuning stability can I expect?

Each handpan is carefully tuned to ensure a stable and lasting sound. Over time, all handpans may require minor retuning, especially if dropped or exposed to extreme temperatures. If your handpan ever needs tuning, Luc offers professional retuning services.

15. Are handpans loud? Can I play them indoors?

Handpans produce a gentle, resonant sound that is audible but not overpowering. They can be played softly for meditation or more dynamically for performance. Unlike drums or other percussion instruments, their sound is soothing and blends well in indoor and outdoor environments.

16. Can I travel with a handpan?

Yes! Handpans are lightweight and portable, making them great for travel. We highly recommend a protective case if you plan to take your handpan on flights or long journeys.

17. Do you offer lessons or resources for learning?

We can recommend handpan tutorials, online courses, and local resources to help you get started. Because the instrument is intuitive, many people enjoy exploring it freely without formal instruction.

18. Can I use a handpan for sound healing?

Absolutely! The deep, resonant tones of a handpan are perfect for sound therapy, meditation, and relaxation. Many sound healers use handpans alongside instruments like singing bowls, didgeridoos, and flutes to create soothing soundscapes.

19. Do you ship internationally?

Currently, we primarily serve Canada, but we may be able to ship internationally. Contact us to discuss your location and shipping options.

20. What is your return policy?

If you feel you are not resonating with the scale you ordered, please feel free to contact us for an exchange. Exchange times may experience delays depending on availability.
